ASTHMA sufferers are being warned of record pollen levels on the Central Coast this spring.

Pollen levels measured in Gosford in September were 20 times higher than for the same period last year, and among the highest ever recorded in NSW, Central Coast Public Health Unit director Peter Lewis said. Levels were significantly higher than in Sydney.

Dr Lewis said allergy sufferers and asthmatics should be aware of the increase in environmental triggers.

``The recent rain has promoted the growth of grasses, just in time for pollination, so more environmental triggers are expected soon," he said.

Central Coast AsthmaWatch reported almost 30,000 people on the Coast suffered from asthma, with one in four children and one in 10 adults diagnosed with the condition.

Asthma sufferers are being urged to visit their GP for an assessment.
